Google Business Photos and Posts: Do They Help?

Do photos and posts on your Google Business Profile help? Photos and posts do not move you up the map, but they do win the click. What the data says, and a two-minute check you can do today.

"Nobody looks at photos." Kate says it with total confidence, right before Dan's camera flash goes off in her face. It is a fair thing to wonder, though. Do photos and posts on your Google Business Profile do anything? The honest answer has two halves, and each one has a source and a year on it.

Dan and Kate go through the research on Marketing Tune-Up. Dan brings the facts. Kate brings a few that are out of date, including that posts do not do anything anymore. She turns out to be half right.

If the listing itself is still dusty, start with the four Google Business Profile mistakes. Then come back here for the photos and posts.

Photos get people moving

Start with the digital storefront window. Google's own research found that business listings with photos get 42% more requests for directions and 35% more clicks through to their websites than listings without photos. That comes from Google and Oxera's 2014 research, quoted in Google's 2026 Business Profile Best Practices Playbook.

Two notes keep this honest. It is older data, from 2014. And it compares listings with photos to listings with no photos at all, not a few photos to many. The lesson still holds: your photos are the window of your digital storefront. No photos looks like a ghost town, and people keep scrolling.

Photos are not a ranking cheat code

It is tempting to upload five hundred photos tonight and wait for number one. Sterling Sky's 2021 photos case study added photos to four business profiles and tracked their map rankings. The result was no measurable impact on rankings.

Photos do not move you up the map. They move people from looking to acting: driving over, or, if you are the one who goes to them, calling or booking the appointment. That is a different job, and a worthwhile one.

Posts: half right

"Posts do not do anything anymore" is the other out-of-date fact, and it is half right. In Sterling Sky's 2021 test of Google posts, weekly posts over nine weeks across 441 keywords had no measurable ranking impact in the local pack.

Here is the other half. Posts are not for the rankings. They are for the person who is already looking at your profile. In Sterling Sky's 2021 analysis of about a thousand Google posts, posts with real photos, not stock photos, got 5.6 times more clicks. Real photos. Not the handshake in front of a laptop.

What the experts say in 2026

Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey asked 47 local search experts to rank 187 factors. Photo quality ranked number 11 for turning searchers into customers. How often you post ranked 148th for map rankings.

Put plainly, photos are the closer and posts are a friendly wave. Photos close the deal, because they show people exactly what they will get. Posts open the conversation, because they say you are here, you are busy, and here is what is new. Google's own 2026 playbook adds that regularly updated Business Profiles get 5 times more views. Fresh photos and posts are the open sign on your digital storefront.

What does move the map

Google Business Profile Help says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity. The map work is categories, consistent listings, and reviews. Photos and posts win the click once you show up.

What the ongoing work looks like

You can do this yourself. If your plate is full, we are happy to take it off your hands.

For your Google Business Profile, that means filling in every section, setting your categories and services, and then every month adding real photos of your work and writing posts about your offers, each with a button to call or book.

For Google Maps, that means checking that your pin is in the right spot, your name, address, and phone match across the web, and your hours are right. Then we track where you show up every month and put it in a plain-English report. Nobody honest can promise the top spot. You get steady work you can see. Pick any piece, or none.

Do this today

Open your Google Business Profile and look at your newest photo.

  • Is it from the last three months? If not, add one real photo of your work today.
  • Check your last post. If it is older than your favorite shoes, post one this week: a real photo, a title, and a button.
  • Skip the stock photo of a handshake. Real beats stock.

Photos and posts are your local proof: proof you are real, and proof you are open.
